Basicly there is only a small difference. Black Pipe , or Black Iron Pipe, is normaly found in older home construction, and in commerical properties for the HVAC system, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. galvanized pipe in a more up-to-date item, however it is generally not good for pressure uses, ie water pressure. I would use "L" copper pipe and PVC for DWV, Drain Waste and Ventilation.

Pipe sizes are similar, not enough o matter in water uses. Black iron pipe is used for gas piping & not used for water due to the amount of rust that would build up. Galvenized piping is used primarily for water lines due to the galvanize preventing corrosion. Its the same product used on galvenized fencing, etc..
It can also be used for gas piping but has some restrictions in that use.

The pipe dimensions between the two are identical. The only difference is the galvanizing zinc added.

The difference is a coating of galvanizing on the pipe to help prevent rust. It won't last forever, but will at least delay rusting.
