I'm a happily married Lesbian. My partner and I want to have children, however she can obviously not get me pregnant. I'm just starting to look into sperm banks. Has anyone (gay or straight) gone this route? Can you please tell me about the process and any tips? Thank you.

While I am very open to idea of adoption, being adopted myself, the waiting list is so long to actually get a child that we might as well get on the list now if we want a baby by the time we are 40 (I'm 26). We do not have the millions that some celebrities have to cut the line.

My partner and I tried AI. Here's some things that we considered when searching for sperm banks. It was important for us to find one that would allow the child, when he/she was 18, to contact the donor. At the time, there were 2 banks that we found that had some donors who had agreed to do that. One was in S.F. area and the other in the Boston area.

I don't know if it's been proven, but I believe that intrauterine insemination (as opposed to intravaginal) has a higher success rate. The sperm that has been prepared to use for IU costs a little more than that prepped for IV.

We avoided asking a friend or relative to donate, because we have both known people that were totally cool with us being lesbian and then "found Jesus" and changed their minds. We didn't want that to happen with the donor. I've known other people who have gone with known donors and had no problems.

The banks usually provide a catalogue of donors, listing a lot of physical traits, background information, etc. We tried to match my physical traits & ethnic background with a donor. From this listing, we found some that seemed like a match and then received more detailed background information - often in the donor's own hand writing. These were available for a fee.

What else can I tell you? You need to track your ovulation, so you can order the sperm in advance and have it ready for the day of ovulation. It comes overnight and in a liquid nitrogen tank, which you need to ship back to the bank.

I hope some of this helps. Good luck!

First of all, don't listen to anything negative anyone has to say. They are just jealous that you found someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. If they hate gays so much why on earth are they always in the GLBT section? Anyway, I don't really know a lot about this subject. I do have an idea for an invention that will make it much more easier for women to get pregnant via artificial inseminaton, but I cannot disclose the details right now, and by the time I can, you and your wife will already have had those two beautiful children. But good luck. One quick question though, why did you two decide that only you would carry the babies? Just curious.

Insurance will cover some of the cost. NY state is probably the safest state to get sperm from because of the safety protocols they have in place. The sperm cannot be used unless the male testes negative for HIV 6 months after he donates the sample.

Also, some donors give permission for their names to be released when the child comes into her/his majority.

There was an article on Yahoo recently how some mothers got the same sperm donor and a few of the children ended up having autism. A person may not disclose his whole medical history. However he may not know a disease runs in his family.

My boss tried that and was unsuccessful. It was very expensive. I think it's great you two want to start a family. Have you thought about adoption? There are so many children that need loving homes. But, if you are truly set on Artificial Insemination, then go to the link below to read about the different techniques that are used. Also, I think you will find there is a phone number that you can call if you have any further questions.
Good Luck!!

You really need to check the local laws. Here in Indiana there was a group that tried to make it Illegal for any but a married couple to be artificially inseminated(it didn't pass.) perhaps actually talking to Planned Parenthood in your area is a way to go, even though they are usually on the prevention side I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

I'm not gay, but I wish you all the luck in conceiving, being pregnant is an amazing experience. I couldn't help with tips, because I got pregnant the usual way, however I think you and you're partner should talk about who will carry the baby and get all the details together.Good luck with it all.

I have not gone this route, but I have friends who have through artificial insemination. one couple had a friend who was a sperm donor, and the other couple found a sperm donor through an online website. unfortunately, I'm sorry, I don't know what that website is.
I wish you the best of luck!

and yes, if anyone noticed the similarity, "Rudecatt63" is my obnoxious, hateful impersonator.

Your child will want to know who their Daddy is one day. Look at the statistics of sperm bank donor children seeking out their fathers. Have you thought this far down the track?

Whether you are gay or straight if you are suitable candidates you should have no problems.

Good Luck with your endeavours.

Married Lesbian? Never heard of such a thing.

Attempting to bring a child into the world? Are you going to give the child up for adoption or are you a surrogate parent for someone who is unable to have children?

There really are so many homeless babies in this world that need love. Consider adoption.
