The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 provides the basis of all space law with its clear decree that no nation can claim ownership to any part of it, and all nations must agree to its peaceful use. The treaty was signed by all major space powers and remains the guiding light of space initiatives

All the nations of Earth, the major ones anyway, have agreed that everyone on Earth owns the moon and that no country in particular has a claim. In fact, when Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin put up the plaque on the moon, they read it aloud. "Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon, July, 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

I think when you ask that you are in turn asking who owns earth and indeed the universe really! The answer I think is that no-one really does- essentially I believe it's all a borrow. To take this further you have to remember also that "own" is a human word we have created as in any word so on that basis "own" only has value to the users of the word "own". Just as to say God owns the moon, universe etc. only has value if you believe in God etc.. See it's a all a question of philosophy! :-) Hope that helps!

The international community owns it, which means to say that so far, it belongs to no one.
In spite of this, you may find ads selling acres on the moon. I would advise you do not buy from them because you will not own for real the ground on the moon.
If, for instance, an international institution decides to give or sell parts of the moon to earth countries then they can buy your part.

No body officially owns the moon, except one thing, the Earth is what owns the moon.

I have the deeds in my attic, next to my Nazi snuff films, Walt Disney's brain, and Bigfoot's toenail clippings (which make excellent nibbles at a dinner party by the way)

Would be prepared to lease the moon to any property developers, or a big man called Donald.
