It's a very good book that movies never do a service to. I think (considering that many in our population still hold very conservative religious views) that this is a great critique of what these expectations can do to us. It's a great character study and it provokes a lot of thought. We'd all be better off if we exposed ourselves to good literature.

I've tried to read that darn book 3 or 4 times in the last 6 years. It has never happened. I like the idea of the story, but I got bogged down with the way it was written. And I always finish a book I've started, except this and Great Expectations.

Yes, I did. Its an extreme novel with extreme characters, some solidly evil, with evil names. Its very dramatic. The Scarlett Letter literally exists. There is a cemetery in downtown Boston, next to Kings Chapel on Tremont St. that has a grave there with a big A on it. The site of this grave is descibed exactly as it stands today in the novel. Its in a scene where someone looks into a window and I think looks at Chillingsworth.

I loved it. I read it many years ago for a book report in high school. I got an A.

I enjoyed it very much, it's an exceptional novel, but maybe a little bit misogynistic. Educational, however... Makes you wonder.
