Hi,

There is a condition referred to as "residua post parte", which means that pieces of the placenta get stuck to the womb and do not leave with the foetus. If the pieces remain in the body, they start decaying, and cause infections. Continued bleeding can be the body's attempt to rid itself of impuritied.

Whether you have this potentially very serious condition may be indicated by how you bleed. If it comes in sudden spells of larger amount of blood, I would suggest that you rush into a hospital as fast as you can. A hundred years ago women were bleeding to death from this condition. Nowadays the womb can be cleaned in a short surgical procedure under anaesthetics.

I hope that yours is not a serious case of bleeding, but in either case, do not underestimate it, and have it checked out by a gynaecologist.

I hope this helps.

You probably should call the doctor. Is is bright red blood or darker red "period" blood? You could have torn tissue from the miscarriage. The other possibility is that your body is producing hormones that are promoting your period. If this is so, it may be awhile until your body will switch back to egg producing hormones. Be very careful not to get anemic during the elongated bleeding time. If you feel tired, make sure your doctor knows.

If you were far along...then this is normal. But it isnt normal if its a whole bunch. Give it a few more days and then if you still are bleeding get checked out. Also dont wait if youre having abdominal pain.
