If you can find any new laptop for $500, then that would be your best bet.

A new laptop with a 15 inch screen will cost more than that unless you catch a great deal or big rebate or get it totally stripped down.

Anyway, Dell, Toshiba, and Acer all make relatively inexpensive versions that are reliable. What is inside the laptop is usually more important.

A Dell B130 is a good notebook for around $500. My only suggestion is it would cost a little more money but I would purchase a warranty for as long as you want the computer to last. Also if you have Kids or accident prone complete care is the best way to go..it covers anything that might happen to your computer

Try looking in a Dell catalog. I remember that there was a laptop for around 300 USD there...
