My grandfather was a Mason and unfortunately died before I Was old enough to ever ask about the merits of joining. I have looked through many resources about joining, but other than joining a brotherhood to do charitable work, I cannot see what the big draw is. I already work with a charitable organization and feel I do my part to give back for all that I have received, so what reason would i want to join?

My Grandfather had great pride in the organization, so I am wondering other than the benefits of giving back and joining a brotherhood (things that I feel I already have in my life) why would I want to join.

I would like to hear from sincere members and am open to exchanging views by email if necessary.

Thanks.

Masonry is also a Fraternity of men who believe in a creator you know a supreme being and through that knowledge they can gain what it takes to be a better man on earth helping your brother, whether he is a mason or not.
I am a mason and if a brother Mason asked for any type of help I would lend it as that is my obligation as a Mason. Especially to a brother.
I have visited lodges in other countries, and aside from validating I was actually a mason, they welcomed me into their Lodge as well as inviting me for dinner and lunches while I spent time in their country.
You Grandfather got it...If you don't feel it would better you as a man then you don't have to join but it would keep the fraternity alive in your family...
Feel free to e-mail me I am a past Master of my lodge and I get it also...It's a heart felt thing. I can give you some titles of books to read. Masonry has a rich heritage and a lot of Myths surround Masonry...It is fun to read about these and also when you watch a movie or read a book the author or director will put something in the script that says hey out there I am a mason and you are the only one in the theater that say hey I just caught that...

I thought National treasure although a fictional movie was super..

You get a lot of connections out of this. Although the Masons ask the members to not work against each other, you can work with each other. This helps in business settings, such as a person may own a shipping company, and you may be an exporter, so you can set up a deal with a brother.

They also have a long history, and in some places that gains you a lot of respect within. You can basically walk into any lodge in any country and they will treat you as a brother. If you are lost or in trouble in France, it may be better to go to the lodge then the police.
