This question got to me because the study of anything usually ends in -ology, so I looked it up:

LEXICOLOGY is a speciality in linguistics dealing with the study of the lexicon or words within language and how they evolve. The term first appeared in the 1820s, though obviously there were lexicologists before that.

A good example of lexicology at work, and one everyone is familiar with, is the dictionary or thesaurus, which as we know are constantly changing and being updated.

If you are interested in linguistics you might want to take a look at Noam Chomsky's work. Chomsky is one of big guns in modern linguistics and also a superb modern poilitical thinker.
