The government has no control over my life today, so why would I care if it dissolved? It would mean I wouldn't have to pay taxes for awhile. What does the government have to do with power and electric? Those are privately held companies. Man survived for eons without gas and electric, so I think I could manage quite well. I would thank the lord that I live in Florida. I can grow food pretty much all year round. I would help others yes, that is what people generally do.

I agree the stupidity level in this country is alarming...working with the public the past 12 years I have noticed that more and more people need their hand held to get through the day. I believe I would survive should there be a coup or something now. I thrive under stressful conditions. I consider myself a leader by example...I would make sure my daughter and I were okay and then seek out others to aid....I weep for the future of this country...some of the college students I run into cannot perform simple arithmetic...how would they survive??

In the 1950's, science fiction author C.M. Kornbluth wrote a story called "The Marching Morons." In it he envisioned a future world where the majority of the population couldn't perform the simplest tasks without the aid of machines built by the very few who belonged to the intellectual elite. Even surgeons were only able to do their jobs because their tools did it for them. Sadly, we do still seem to be moving in the direction he perceived fifty years ago. The worst part is that these gullible people are the ones most likely to vote in fascist leaders because they're easily impressed by their show of strength and promises of safety. I don't know what the answer is to this situation. Setting a minimum IQ requirement for voters might seem to be the simplest solution, but it would be contrary to our nation's principles of equality.
As for the second half of your question, they may need guidance of some sort, but they don't need an iron-fisted dictatorship. Those of us with more intelligence neither need nor want to be forced to live under the oppressive government the weak-minded seem to prefer. As Padme Amidala said in my favorite deleted scene from Star Wars Episode II, "Popular rule is not democracy. It gives the people what they want, not what they need." This was her explanation for refusing to allow the government to rewrite their constitution to allow her to serve another term as queen. The point is that if one leader or party is allowed to bypass the traditional checks and balances, we lose the all-important restrictions on power that made this country a democracy.

You are very right in so many ways. I tend to believe most people are stupid on a regular basis, but that's because I am a lot brighter than your regular Joe, and I know it. So, I assume your a moron til you prove to me otherwise. We live in a society that is completely hand held by the government and the media. Without them, we would have mayhem. There are so many people who can't cook a meal without a microwave, can't find a location without Mapquest, can't function without an ipod. Our society has grown dependent on such luxuries. But these luxuries were all made possible by the intelligence of other humans, so there must be a few of us smart enough out there to get by.

the only thing that came to mine after i read your question was, i look back at the devastation of Katrina, where people are making it on their own, no matter what because the gov't didn't shut down, it just was not there, there is no power, nor gas and they are surviving. so we can look at these people as an example of the question you asked but on a larger scale. yes there leaders and there are followers, thank God for the leaders as this was what they were born to do

My husband's an electrician, he better be able to figure it out or I'll be crying. ;) I don't think what you're referring to is "shepherds". It's commerce. I pay for electricity and someone gets a paycheck from my money. If the economy collapsed everyone would be in a heap of trouble. That's true.

I think I would be able to survive. I also think my family would survive because we are all capable of taking care of ourselves. I made sure of that. Ya never know what this world is going to become and the people on it. Ya never know.

Most people abdicate their free will, and allow themselves to be led.
They used to be mainly sheep. Now, given the state of the world, many have devolved (or been un-intelligently designed) into lemmings.

No, I think most people are stupid and usually deserve their own stupidity catching up with them. I believe in helping people. I believe we should be compassionate. But - I don't believe in living somebody's life for them or getting my wires crossed by scam artists who play on that.
