First off I do not smoke and rarely drink

I had this before but it went away but now I am more concerned because now it is affecting my shoulder. Even though it could be stress I heard sometimes your gall bladder can cause that kind of pain. I will just be at work sitting down and not really doing anything strenous when I get a sharp pain that radiates in the upper middle part of my back. Sometimes my shoulder is affected, It feels like a knife from the inside. It lasts about 5-10 seconds max and then goes away. !5 minutes or sometimes longer goes by and it comes back again. I can feel it coming on. It starts off briefly kind of dull and then bam. Almost like the pain you get from heartburn but worse. As I said before it came about a couple months ago and then was gone but now it is back again. Can anxiety cause it? Is it physical?

I am 28 (F)

I'm not in the medical field, but my wife had a similar problem that traveled up and down her back and shoulder. Her problem turned out to be a psiatic (sp?) nerve problem. She goes regularly to see a chiropractor and a massage therapist. She also bought a ergonomic chair for work, which has helpled. Not all better yet, but 50% better. If you have medical coverage (even if you don't), better get checked out to make sure it's not something more serious. Good luck.

Anxiety COULD cause it. It could also be heartburn or trapped gas. Whatever the cause, you might want to get it checked out by a doctor, because sharp unexplained pains, especially like the ones you're describing, can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious condition. Take care!

My mom had a sharp pain in her back which was an aortic dissection. The aorta split and since the vein goes up and behind the heart, that is where my mom felt it. It is the same thing that killed John Ritter because they didn't diagnose it until it was too late.

My mom was in extreme pain and almost died, so I doubt that is what you have. Good luck.

I think definitely it could very well be pain brought on by excessive psychosocial stressers. Try to pay attention. Next time you get the pain, listen to yourself. What are you telling yourself at that time? Do you notice particular negative/doubting "self-statements" during this time?

It could very well be your subconscious speaking to your conscious self in sort of a built-in "note to self" alarm.

You know all the answers already. You just have to Listen.

It could be knots in your back. Go to a massage therapist and they can massage them out. Unfortunalty, I have A LOT of them.
