I always thought that the people and their cases were real. I'm sure that they must get paid for being on the air though. But boy I bet Judge Judy must have an unlisted phone number.

I'm assuming you're talking about People's Court, Judge Judy, etc. The people and their disputes are real (or at least partly real), but the courts aren't actual courts of law. The people who appear on the shows make some sort of agreement with the show's producers to abide by the "court's decision," or at least to act like they will.

Lots of people want to see those conflicts and real issues, which can obviously be entertaining for some. Just an issue: the producers don't have to get the permission of those involved in the court to put that on TV, which perhaps violates some confidentiality issues.

I know that they are real. A few years ago I was contacted by the Judge Judy show for appearance when I had a small case claim pending. I guess it didn't have enough drama in it, because they decided not to use the case.

I'm pretty sure they do. I know for a fact that the people on Divorce Court are real, because there was a girl on there that I went to high school with who was extremely full of herself. She and another classmate of mine got married, and very soon after, divorced. I saw their episode. She was still full of herself even then. Later on that year, I saw her and her child at the mall, and she noticed that I recognized her. She hung her head and tried to walk off quickly.

At least Divorce Court is real. My cousin and his wife went on it. He was so excited - he got $500, a new shirt and a new front tooth (seriously!!!) and a limo ride to and from the airport. Did I mention my cousin is a loser?!
They aired their differences on national television, but it didn't help them sort out anything for their actual divorce.

Well obviously the are real people. They are not robots.
If you are asking if the "cases are real" I would say there has been a bit of coaching going on before the show.

yes, because my cousin had a lawsuit filed in local court and one of the shows called him and asked him to have his case tried on their show
