Microbes are very small, too small to see, living germs. They usually are harmless in tiny numbers found on most things. However, in certain environments they grow - where its warm, wet and there is a food source (usually food or skin). If allowed to grow then they can get to numbers where they can become dangerous. They can move in the air (in water droplets) and skin to any surface contact. Its vital that in food factories and any place where you have skin to skin contact that hygeine is paramount. Washing your hands avoids the microbes building up in numbers.

Just tell them that the word microbe is another word for germ. Then show them that scene in the movie "Outbreak" when the people are sneezing in the theatre and the germ infected particles get sucked into the HVAC system.
