Depend on where you live!! But a room can cost between $400 to $800. To rent a room you must secure a list of "house rules" from the renter specifying exactely in details what you can do and what you cannot do (guest overnight; laundry time, bathroom use time, if shared; cooking priviledges and food storage criteria). Without that you can be in big trouble. Don't forget to specify that the rent shall include your utilities. If seprate, you must know how the formula is for your share!
Do not rent from a single guy if you do not have a "black belt karate" from Bruce Lee. He!he!

The price totally depends on where you are. In DC, room rentals can run into $700-$1,000 per month. Take a look at prices of 1 bedroom and studio rentals in your area to get an idea. Since this would be a sharing situation, you should be less expensive than the studios/1 bedrooms.
Food storage usually works itself out, you share the storage (cabinets, refrigerator, etc) but not the food. It can be a great solution to an expensive housing market.

Yes. I started out renting a room & now I'm renting the whole house. Actually it's a 3 bedroom house & one of the other people I started out with is now renting a room from me. He pays $500/month. I and my significant other take care of the rent & utilities. There are 2 bathrooms, so he has his own. We share the kitchen & food. It worked out well for us, but I have heard some horror stories. Be careful who you decide to live with or who you rent a room to.

The first rule of thumb is consideration. And Make a list. If they have other rooms rented out find out the rules. If only you are you renting with house privileges or all privileges. Make sure (you get more freedom if share the house.) Find out about over night quests. If there are children or others buy own food. Ask for a shelf on frig. and cupboard. Good luck.

I rented a basement from a family when I was 18 years old. They wanted $65.00 per week. Our arrangement was that I could use the kitchen and bathroom. The only thing I didn't like about this was that the bathroom wasn't always clean. This sort of arrangement is very dependant upon the people and how well you get along with them. Chemistry is key. Good Luck!
Hope that helps.

I have not rented a room, but I have known people who have. It did work out. It also provided for them to meet people they would not have normally gotten to know. So it can help save money, but it can also add new people into your life as well.

There were 5 of us in a house
We each had or own cabinet and shared a bathroom
I didn't mind it then, but I don't think I could do it now
