It could be something else too. Mine did that and there was something in the steering column that freaked out. My horn or power steering didn't work either and my air bag light came out. Its a minor thing, but definately would take it to the shop because if the light is on, it won't deploy in an accident.

It depends on what year it is. If it's '96 or newer it will be OBDII. Call arround to your local auto parts chain and see if they have a loaner or rental scanner. Also, a lot of OBDII cars will turn off the light after so many "cycles" if the problem is fixed. "Cycles" are turning on and off the car a certain ammount of times.
