Because Einstein discovered that the true nature of space and time are intricately linked, and that space and time are not absolute entities (meaning space is not immutable, and time is relative). And the most amazing fact that Einstein discovered is that matter and energy can alter space and time.
The link that Einstein found between space and time is through the mathematics of his equations, and what it told him was that matter/energy can warp space and time. Here "warp" means stretch or contract (and also twist - for rotating bodies). So the effects of matter and energy on space and time is very similar:
(1) Large amount of matter can bend space through its gravitation field
(2) Large (and dense like a blackhole) mass can slow down time
(3) High velocity (high velocity implies high kinetic energy) can contract space
(4) High velocity can dilate time.

Einstein believed that time slows down the faster an object is moving. Here's something from the PBS Web site:
"Ever feel like time moves very quickly and sometimes very slowly? ... But you can't actually speed time up or slow it down—it always flows at the same rate, right?
"Albert Einstein didn't think so. His idea was that, theoretically, the closer we come to traveling at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second), the more time would appear to slow down for us from the perspective of someone who, in relation to us, was not moving. He called the slowing of time due to motion time dilation.
"Imagine you're standing on Earth holding a clock. Your friend is in a rocket zooming past you at nearly 186,000 miles per second. Your friend is also holding a clock. If you could see your friend's clock, you'd notice that it seems to be moving a lot more slowly than yours. Your friend, on the other hand, thinks the clock in the rocket is moving just fine, and it's your clock that seems to be moving more slowly. Sound confusing? Well, remember, it took Einstein years to figure this out, and he was pretty smart."

Basically Power stored per unit Space which is the cause of Gravity and all motion in the Universe is equal to Energy displayed by the aether divided by the product of space and time.
No mattter where you sit in space you will find time at that location ;however in may not be the same at different locations.Because time is measured relative to gravitational motion of planets and stars.
So as space density changes in the Universe so does time varies accordingly.

They're not exactly one thing, they're parts of the same thing. Just as you can't have a coin with only one side, you can't have space without time. Matter, energy and all the forces of the universe can only be described in relation to their duration. If there was no time, the universe wouldn't be frozen, it would cease to exist.

It's our minds that separate the two, so we can make judgements about cause and effect and other matters upon which we have depended for survival. In fact two coinciding events (?) in spacetime can be separate in space ( depending upon the frame of reference of the observer) and in time. Any two events which occur along the path of a light ray, such as a light switching on and the illumination of an object resulting are coincidental in spacetime, though not in space or time individually, because they occur along the path of a "light ray".

He hypothesiszed that atoms could travel linear paths through both, and that the speed atoms travel is limited equally in space, and time, by the speed of light.
More simply, if you travel faster than the speed of light, the energy would tear the atoms apart, making enough energy for only light, no longer matter. If you travel faster than time, theoretically the same thing would happen.
