I read in my "WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN EXPECTING" [on page 155] that "The external genitalia are now well developed enough so that the sex of the baby can be detected...". This is also the start of "THE THIRD MONTH" - weeks 9 > 13. Yet all over the net ive looked at it usually says that Im going to have to wait until im 15-20 weeks pregnant to find out. Im going to the doctor on friday and im REALLY hoping to find out. Does anyone know any truth in this?

[I forgot to mention that with my pregnancy - they have decided to do vaginal ultra sounds instead of the normal ones - I wonder if this would make me able to find out sooner? Because I was able to see the "baby" & it's heartbeat at 4 weeks 3 days through a vaginal ultra sound.]

It takes until between 18-20 weeks to usually detect this on a sonogram. In your book, they are just saying that the genitailia are DEVELOPED. Does that make sense? There's really no way to find out yet...sorry! :(

Currently, your baby is either a boy or girl, but the baby is so small that the ultrasound technician or doctor would not be able to see the baby's private parts on the ultrasound. Typically, the baby's gender will show when an ultrasound is done between 18-20 weeks.

The baby's gender can be detected earlier if you have amniocentesis done, but they only do that procedure if they suspect that the baby has an abnormality or if ou request it (but I wouldn't... it's painful and expensive). Amniocentiesis is a procedure where they use a large needle to draw amniotic fluid from the uterus, and then test that fluid to look at the baby's DNA to make sure it's good. The gender is shown in the DNA.

You should definitely get to hear the heartbeat, though! Congrats on your pregnancy!

10 weeks its too soon the dr will not be able to see anything yet. 15-20 weeks is best most say about 18 is a good time for an ultrasound. I had a friend that went at like 13 or 14 weeks and they told her she was going to have a boy and she had a girl so seeing things that soon can be deciving. Give it time you will find out soon enough.

Most old wives tales have no basis where they came from. I broke out really bad when I was pregnant with my son. They say when it's a girl you'll feel a lot of morning sickness but with my girl I felt no signs of being pregnant except for a missed period. None of the things you mentioned has anything to do with proving that you're having a boy or a girl. I agree with yyyyzz (wise) ... wait for the scan.

Well, it depends on how stubborn your baby is!! My daughter was VERY stubborn and didn't want us to know her sex! She kept hiding every time we had an ultrasound. It is pretty difficult to find out the sex of your child this early in your pregnancy but it can be done. One of my friends found out the sex of her baby when she was just 4 months along so i guess there is some truth to that book. I also had this book when I was pregnant but I had a few friends that were pregnant at the same time that also told me a few things about pregnancy that the book didn't tell me.

It is to soon to find out what it is, but you can kind of guess. Like in a couple weeks you can feel where you are "growing" up high is a girl and down low a boy that is how I found out before I got the results. I dont know if this is true, but if you remember how you had sex then you can use this one. Ok if his penis penetrated deep like doggy style, then it will more that likely be a boy because the "male" sperm lives for only an hour, but they swim faster than the "girl". hopefully you understood that!
I am 20 weeks and I figured it out by that. CONGRATS!!!

I'm 10 weeks pregnant too!!!!! Well, actually i think i'm about to turn 11 weeks. Congratulations!! I am due April 1st but i'm having twins so she said i'll be delivering in March for sure!!!
HOW are you feeling? About the gender thing, i hate to say this but it will not be for at least another 10 weeks or so when you will find out. I think i found out at 18 weeks for my first one. Is this your first?
Here is a cool thing that my sister showed me. There's this calendar (chinese ancient gender prediction calendar) that pretty accurately predicts what you'll be having. There are several websites...do a search or try this one: http://www.obfocus.com/calculators/gender.htm
Good luck!!!!

Oh, about vaginal ultrasounds: they ALWAYS do vaginal ones at the first prenatal appointment because the uterus is too small to be seen with the sonogram machine through the belly. They will only do one more ultrasound which will be the gender determining one at around 18-22 weeks unless you are high risk. They definitely won't be doing vaginal ultrasounds the whole time. I hope this helps!

I also went trough that headache with all my 3 pregnancies , botton line is the reason the doc and all health practitioner don't tell us if it is a boy or a girl before 20 weeks is because they are scared of being wrong and being sued....At least when u reach the 20 weeks if they can see and tell u what are u having the chances of them being wrong is very little.

It is too soon. Up until 16 weeks, both genders have "nubs" surrounded by two flaps. The nubs look exactly alike. In the male, the nub becomes a pen*s and the flaps become the scr*tum... in a girl, the nub becomes a cl*tor*s and the flaps become the exteror v*gina.

My doctor made me wait until I was 27 weeks along to find out. His concern was that if he looked too early it would appear to be a girl, even if it was a boy. He said early on the scrotum is swollen and looks very similar to labia.

I had a different doctor with my first daughter and I knew when I was 5 months along. Talk to your doctor and tell them you want to know as early as possible, but don't be upset if they tell you that you have to wait. It would be horrible to have them tell you wrong.
