This is really a question about what the core values are of Western society, and which of them are up for debate. There isn't really anything unique to a good Muslim citizen over any other good citizen - it's just that certain issues are statistically more likely to be relevant to certain communities.

For example, free speech, and freedom to satirise is important - protesting when you are offended is OK (free speech), but not in a way as to prevent others having their say, too. Democracy should be based on policy, rather than a feeling of obligation or loyalty to a candidate's background. Elements that oppose the society (not the leadership) we live in must be stood up against. I'm sure others will state these things in less diplomatic terms, but there you go.

I just want to see a society where all are given respect regardless of their colour, race, creed or religion. A society where difference is respected and accepted as something that will be a positive influence on our children on our grandchildren, to the benefit of all. I believe in equality but, what I think is missing in Western society is understanding which leads to a sense of not knowing where the other person is coming from. I have friends from all over the world, not only on the Internet, but some really good friends from university the only criteria they had to have was they were nice people. My life has been enriched by knowing them and that might be the crux of the question, you have to know people. Unfortunately the immigrant communities, certainly in the UK, tend to isolate themselves from the general population which may lead to misunderstandings. Don't get me wrong, there are many white Christian and Non-Christian people I would not want to know and I appreciate there is a lack of tolerance in our society but if particular elements in society are isolating themselves they cannot be known. We can't know each other unless we talk and that, possibly, is the way religious and social leaders should take us. The other side of the coin is maybe by encouraging us not to mix secures their position in their society. Bad people are just that, bad people and good people are just good people. I know which ones I look forward to meeting.

Eddie Izzard once said (he's a comedian) when I was fairly young and impressionable that " most Muslim people are very peace loving, you know relaxed and groovy, this is very important America you should remember that." I never forgot. You deserve the same freedom and respect as everyone else. I know these are tense times and it is probably not easy being Muslim in the west. So answering your question I expect the same from you as I would any good citizen. Being a descent human being is my only requirement for my respect and my friendship. Peace to you from frogspeaceflower.

I'm a Muslim western citizen, I respect the western law, culture and I accept their rules. I would not hesitate to report any suspicious behaviour. I accepted the western society as a better way of life than Muslim country. I do not want Sharia law in the west as it is not implemented in 99% of Muslim countries. All what I expect in return is respect, fair treatment and not to be treated as a terrorist till otherwise proved!! The western society got to realise that most of Muslims are innocents and only tiny (less than 0.0001% spoil the reputation of Islam) NO FOR TERRORISM any where in the world including Israel and USA terror in the middle east.

I would'nt expect anything from a British muslim person other than they firstly obey the laws of this country and put their religion second. I would'nt expect them to do terrorist deeds or to help terrorists and extremists. I would expect that they attempt to weasle out the terrorists they know are in their own flock. Live and let live within the law of this land, or why else be here. How likely is that! Frankly I would and have defended ethnic people who have been in danger of being harassed. But I know that for every good person who is muslim, there are at least 5 who are extremists. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.

It's a case of respect. To respect other human beings despite age, gender, colour, religion and so on. Forcing other people to see your point of view just does not work whether you are Muslim, Jew, Jehovah Witness. For terrorists to blow up other human beings does not earn them respect. It is a small minority of extremists that are bring down the majority, and that is why there is a massive spread of dislike for any Muslims. This is a war that just will not be won by anyone, and that is tragic.

I would expect the same as I expect from an ethical atheist, Hindu or Mormon.
Respect the laws of the country, Dont try and force your beliefs or laws (sharia law) on 'us', If you dont like something, try and change it through a democratic political route....and accept the democratic descisions of the rest of your fellow citizens.
try to integrate
learn the language of the country you are in
respect out culture

I'm myself, and i think a lot of other people are being themselves as well trying to be someone there not.
Just be yourself and respect what others believe in and you should be ok.
I everybody can tolerate others around them then Earth would be a much happier place to live in.

Western civilisation is essentially secular. So a citizen's religion has (or certainly should have) no bearing on whether they are a good, bad or indifferent citizen.

I think Abularaby has got it right!
Good for you pal.
We should respect one and other, regardless of colour, race or creed.
A criminal is a criminal! A terrorist is a terrorist! A dick- head is a dick-head. Doesn't matter who or what he supports, Muslim, Christian, Atheist and on and on!
