My son is 3 months old and is sleeping through the night in his crib. We would like to start travelling with him to see family for overnight stays, but I truly don't want him to regress to waking up in the middle of the night. Any suggestions?? And what should we use as a crib -- does a pack and play work well? Thx!

The best thing I've found is to take sheets that he has slept on with you. I pull them off the crib mattress right before we leave and stick them in the pack n play side pocket. I think the feel and smell help them sleep well while we are out. I have used hotel cribs, but never hotel sheets. I've had my pack and play for almost 8 years and have used it alot. None of my three (ages 8, 5 and 9mos.) had trouble sleeping when traveling. Also, if you'll be in a noisy hotel or house you might want to get him used to listening to a lulluby cd and take that with you too.

We just recently went on a 12 hour trip with our 10 week old son and he did very well. He slept most of the way and I stopped to feed/burp/diaper as often as he was hunger, which was a little more spread out than usual because of all his sleeping. He still managed to sleep all through the night after the trip as well. We use a pack and play and it is perfect b/c you can fold it up and take along wherever you go.

Traveling with kids always disrupts their sleep patterns.....especially if they sleep in the car while you are driving long distances.

EDITED TO ADD:
I've been sent criticizing emails reguarding this answer, saying that I didn't really offer any answer or advice.

OK....here's my official advice. It's normal for a baby's sleep patterns to get interrupted when you travel. Expect the sleep pattern to be interrupted by traveling. Deal with it. It's normal. It's also normal for a child to NOT sleep through the night for the entire first year. It's normal for them to sleep through for a while and then NOT sleep through for a while due to teething, growth spurts, colds, developmental milestones, separation anxiety, etc. etc. Don't expect sleeping through the night at 3 months to last for the whole first year. Be flexible and be prepared for it to change. Parenting is a 24/7 gig and you should expect to be needed at night too at such a young age.

Yes a pack and play would work fine but really I don't think that would be too comfortable. Try finding a well-padded playpen so it's more like a matress instead of a thin pad underneath him. Also, here are some other things you could try that I think might work better:

yes, a pack and play works great, take his favorite toy and blanket, try to keep him awake a little in the car, also since you are visiting family and friends, follow your nightly routine with him just like you were at home.
