My sister is a Kindergarten teacher and they just started the first year of all day Kindergarten so she has a lot more time to fill!! She asked me for ideas of fun activities to do. I suggested everybody just hold hands in a big circle and walk in time to the music, then switch direction and walk the other way, The little one LOVE that. Any other ideas? Art projects? Physical activities? Games?

WOW! What a huge transition to make with limited help and resources! I used to teach all day Kindergarten. Morning time was the Pledge of Allegance and a patriotic song then we went to morning work which was a few sheets of following directions either cut and paste or color, etc. (busy work). Then we would collect lunch money and chart who was eating at school and then who brought their lunch. Next was calendar time. At calendar time we discussed the calendar and count the days of the week and say the months of the year and each child had their own small chalk boards or dry erase boards and we would say a rhyme to help remember our numbers and practice writing our numbers. We would practice counting by 5's and 10's, discuss evens and odds. This took up most of our morning time. We would go to story time and do a fun activity with each story that was either art or puppets or recreating the story. Then we would go into writing practice. We did the "Shirley" Method of math and english. Next was usually free time for the children. Either computers, dramatic play, reading, puppets, table toys, etc. Next was time for our special...either art, music, gym, computers or library and sometimes there was some time for outdoor play. We would do science activities outside. Then it was time for restroom, wash hands and lunch then recess and then we would have a calming story and time for rest time for an hour. After rest time, I would start reading a chapter book that would gain the attention of Kindergarteners and just read a few pages. We then would go over the morning work and do a math activity. Next we would have an afternoon snack and outdoor time and then it was usually time for getting ready to go home. Sometimes, educational short movies were watched during snack. The best activities for Kindergarteners are simple ones that are messy and encourage friend-making skills. Please see the listed websites and have fun!

There are so many, art projects are wonderfull and you can look them up online. Sit in a circle and have the children roll a ball to each other and when they get the ball have them tell what they did at home the night before. Make up a felt board ( a big one) Have things that can be placed on there depicting weather, happy , sad faces, ... for instance Have johnny come up and you ask what is the weather like today, he then places the correct picture on the felt board. Ask susie what activity the class should do , have pictures of music, walk outside, storybook. Ask billie if he is happy or sad today, have him pick out the face and then ask him why he is happy or sad.
On a chalk board do mixed up sentences, it is a great memory game. Ask each child what they did for instance Susie watched a movie last night and Billie went to Walmart. Write the sentences, then have the kids put their heads on the desk and erase each kids response and put it with another childs name. Kid really seem to like this. There is so much you can do , if i listed them all i would take up an entire page, but a lot of these things can be found on line. Good luck and have fun.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head...Good luck and ask your child's teacher I'm sure they plan on having a list for a Halloween party.

make grilled cheese sandwiches. obviously they just put the cheeese and butter and the teacher grills them. but its fun and easy plus they get to eat it. in the morning, make each kid a 'annoucer' ( or whatever you want to name it) for the day, they point to the date on the calender, sing the month song, etc. oh and costumes and a kitchen or play area is fun too.
