Try making up a rhyme to help them remember the combination.

Just go over it several times until they get it memorized.

In the cafeterias in our county they have 6 or 8 digit lunch numbers and have to enter it into an ATM type pad to get lunch. Even kindergartners remember it. So I would think that they can remember a combination.

depends on what kind of lock. if its the dial/spinning kind then.
1. spin to the right 2 times
2. stop at your first number
3. spin counterclockwise once
4.stop at your 2nd number
5. go (in clockwise) to your 3rd number

the other kinds are pretty straight forward, you just line up the numbers or letters.
