I'm going to take the term Official sadist to mean someone whose job it is to torture prisons at one of the just-admitted-by-president-Bush CIA "black" prisons in foreign countries. So, going with that assumption, here is what I would do.

I would take 100 of the "information leads" that the torturer was able to obtain from prisoners. I would then take the torturer on a trip in a time machine going forward into the future so that he/she could see, what actually happened in each of the cases in which government officials followed up on those information leads. Did the information gained by torturing the prisoners actually lead to lives being saved? Even if it did lead to lives being saved, did the very existence of the black prison where torture takes place lead to the recruitment/creation of more "bad guys" than the number of bad guys that were captured because of the lead?

Then I would step out of the time machine and step into a hypothetical machine. I would set the hypothetical machine to take me to a manifestation of what would have happen if the people working at the black prison had never worked there but instead used their skills in spying, technology, negotiation and diplomacy to obtain information leads in other ways. Would the information obtained be more accurate? Would the more lives have been saved? Would fewer bad guys have been recruited/created?

It might be a learning experience for me as well.
