In about an hour, I am trying out for my high school's performance of Suesical the Musical. They WANT us to sing a song that's in Suessical, (they even did a workshop on Tues. so we could learn them) but that is a bad idea because then they only see you as the character you tried out for, and if it wasn't what they are looking for, they only see you as 'not that character' instead of 'how about that character?'. What type of song should I sing? Jazzy, something really brassy, something pretty, what? I don't know any of the songs or characters, so that could work to my advantage. Or not.

The person auditioning us is being really unproffesional and bragging about this freshman who has done proffesional stuff, sings at weddings, &c. and she personally knows her. I don't stand a good chance, but everyone else trying out tonight feels the same way. Any good suggestions on how to calm my nerves?

im not really sure what you should sing... probably something upbeat and happy. as for your nerves, pretend that your somewhere where you feel the most comfortable. if it was me, i would just think about me singing alone in my room, just to myself. good luck, i hope you get the part you want!

I haven't seen Suessical (although I really want to). I would suggest that, if possible, you sing a part from a song that includes many characters (again, I don't know the musical), so that those making the decisions on casting can see that you are willing to be flexible and would like to be considered not just for one role. Break a leg!
