Composers used to write Masses for the church which was a whole program with its own music that is set to the progression of the service. These days the music is plugged in at the right moments while the rest of the service is planned out. As far as everyday life goes: Before there were record players and cd's people had no way of hearing music in their own home besides playing it. Families would hang out around the piano and play and sing songs for fun
