I am wanting to be Scarlet O'Hara for Halloween... I think I am going to make the green dress that she made out of the curtains to go see Rhett... Does anyone know what all I'll need to make it look as authentic as I can? pettycoat, or those butt bumper things? or anything else? I'm not sure what all they used to wear back then to make the dresses look the way they did... HELP!!

I don't think I'll really be making it out of velvet... Just some sort of green material... Not really sure yet. Haven't done much research, just thought of it today...

Hoop skirts will help to hold the dress out at the bottom. If you are making this outfit and can sew, an easy way would be to take a pattern for a skirt that flares out and sew or tack a hula hoop into the hemline. You can either make it from lightweight material if you would like to just have the hoop skirt, or make it from better material if you'd like to just tack the hula hoop in and have a full skirt that you could wear another time. Sounds like a great costume idea!

You sure have a huge task ahead. First of all velvet is one of the hardest materials to work with and you are going to be covered with green fuzz and well as your home while making it. You will need a petticoat but if I were you I'd rent that. Also be prepared and know that the gown is going to be heavier than anything you've ever worn before. To pull it off you really should include the drapery cords with the tassels. Below are several photos of the gown that should help you get an idea of how to recreate it. It might be far cheaper to rent it at a custom shop than to make it and odds are you'll never wear it again anyway. Good luck.

I am a civil war reenactor. We either make our own uniforms or get them from people we call sutlers. Most of the sutlers are very good at what they do and have done their research on the clothing. They also have patterns. A pattern is probably what you want.
