Too many people like games that only work on windows.
Also there's the small matter of the millions that Micro$oft spend on marketing.
Linux really should be the OS of choice for all our schools.
When the curious child asks how it works, you can show them the source code. A small proportion of them will look at it and become first rate programmers.

Linux has a huge deficit in market share making software not that available for it. That give Windows a huge advantage in being able to perpetuate itself.

You buy a computer because you want to run a program, it only runs on Windows because there are way more Windows boxes so that is what the software company made it run on, so you have to get Windows too.

Also as a network administrator who uses Linux and Microsoft both very regularly, it is much less user friendly to use Linux because everyone is already trained on Windows. You know how to use Windows, not Linux. So why go through the trouble to learn when you have something that works that you already understand. If I were to put Linux on workstations here, I would spend a lot of time teaching my users how to get around.

So as a result I use Linux for file servers only. I have a Microsoft Domain Controller because Active Directory gives me greater controll over the workstations. All my users have Windows. This is not likly to change for a long while.

I bet most of my users don't even know that the majority of their files are on Linux.

I agree Linux is much more stable than Windows.

It is still a long road to go before people can really use Linux like using Windows. People supporting the open source movement are going to great lengths to educate people on Linux. It will take some time before we see everyone being proficient on Linux.

The stability in Windows has been sacrificed for ease of use and user friendliness while it is exactly the opposite Linux (for new users of course, hardcore users of Linux will disagree on the last statement).

each and every operating equipment has that's use and purpose. each and every operating equipment has that's own experts and cons. what's extra appropriate is a controversy of opinion and own determination. you want to maintain homestead windows if you're a Gamer. that's no longer that Linux can not play video games, even though it truly is constrained on what it may play so a techniques as commercial kind of video games. each and every compute in my homestead are twin boot homestead windows and Linux. in my opinion I fairly have the most acceptable in both operating structures. regrettably i exploit Linux ninety 5% of the time and homestead windows on 5% of the time for what Linux does no longer have. purely you could make sure what's nice for you, your needs and your own criteria. Linux can run from a LiveCD because it plenty into reminiscence purely, which means you could mess round with it with out affecting you operating equipment on the demanding force. once you've an risk to apply a Linux pc a buddy would have which will be the thanks to work out what it truly is like.

Well lets see, pardon me if I quote too many of the above answers.
1. It's less user friendly.
2. Its GUI is not as attractive (don't laugh, appearance is why Mac is still around).
3. It has ZERO compatibility with popular software accross the board, burning software, music and video editing software, games, etc.
4. It has limited hardware compatibility especially with wireless cards.
5. They don't advertise. Ever.
6. It takes alot of time to figure things out and not everyone has time to learn about something they don't need.
7. Finding drivers is difficult, sometimes impossible.
8. Sometimes you have to make your own drivers, and that is just not happening.
9. Many people can't double click a mouse or type their name on a keyboard. A complicated OS is doomed to fail.
10. Being proficient in Windows will help you get a job. Many employers haven't even heard of Linux so being skilled with that won't help you.
11. Windows XP does NOT crash constantly if you take care of your computer. Mine never crashes
12. There is absolutely NO PROOF that it is better than Windows. That is purely a matter of opinion.

Ok, that's all I've got for now, I hope I've enlightened everyone.

mainly because of "money"
microsoft have dominance in the pc software world with 95% of the planets operating systems being windows, around 3% being apple o/s and linux with around half of 1%
i also think the problem with linux is that there are so many flavors or distros,i reckon there must be at least 500 flavors at last count
the only way for linux to become more popular is for more people to download it and use it,and for more recognition on the net, such as blogs and advertising and more companys using linux as defualt operating systems
