I've had it done twice. The first time was the worst cuz I didn't know what to expect.

I'm terrified of needles, and for all procedures that involve them, I tell whoever is doing the procedure that I am going to close my eyes and that I do not want to see what is going on, and I especially do not want to see the needle that they are going to use.

Always remember, however scared you are, and how silly you think you are being, the doctor has undoubtedly dealt with someone ten times worse than you are.

In fact, that's a good topic of conversation to have with your doctor while she is performing the amnio. I asked my doctor to tell me stories of patients who were worse than me, and she told me about a gal who actually fainted in the middle of it, and also of a gal who sat straight up on the table in the middle of the procedure and tried to run away, while the needle was still in her!

The actual amnio takes less than a minute. You'll do fine. If I can do it, ANYONE can do it.

I haven't had one but was advised to have one also because of my age. I had a previous miscarriage and decided not to have one. I didn't want to take any chances of having another miscarriage, even though it is slim there is still a chance. I would talk more about it with your dr, and remember it is always your decision to have it or not have it. I am 5 months pregnant and everything is fine with the baby.

this is when they stick a very long needle into your stomach to draw fluids from around the baby to see if it has or could have down's syndrome...they usually advise women over 35 to get these seeing as your risk for a DS baby is higher....i've heard they can hurt a little or a lot but if it makes you more comfortable get one, if you're not worried and know you will love the baby reguardless it may be best to not and avoid any fear or discomfort--good luck and congrats!!

Yes, it really didn't hurt at all the needle was a little scary but no pain some pressure though. no complications afterward.

don't worry you and the baby will be fine.
