I never really thought any of the music I've ever listened to was emo, until my brother made a comment about it yesterday when I was telling him about 30 seconds to mars CD. I know emo = emotional but what bands fall under this category?

Here are the ones I think...
Panic at the disco
Fall Out Boy
My Chemical Romance
30 seconds to mars (now that my bro pointed it out)
am I on the right track?

I might just have to leave it up to the voters on this one cuz I'm still confused what exactly is considered emo music.

It's hard to say. After doing a little research on the web, the lines look a little more blurred than before.

Check out this site: http://www.fourfa.com/

And this site: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=emo

From wikipedia.com:

"emo has come to encompass an extremely wide variety of bands, many of whom have very little in common. The term has become so broad that it has become nearly impossible to describe what exactly qualifies as 'emo'.

Correctly or not, emo has often been used to describe such bands as AFI, Alexisonfire, A Static Lullaby, Brand New, Coheed and Cambria, FALL OUT BOY, Finch, From Autumn to Ashes, From First to Last, Funeral for a Friend, Hawthorne Heights, Matchbook Romance, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, Silverstein, Something Corporate, The Starting Line, Taking Back Sunday,The Used, Thrice, and Thursday.[8]

The classification of bands as 'emo' is often controversial.

In many cases, the term has simply been attached to them because of musical similarites, a common fashion sense, or because of the band's popularity within the 'emo' scene, not because the band adheres to emo as a music genre."

Yes, you´re on exactly the right track. I love Emo music too and those are definitely a good bunch of bands. Here are a couple of other emo band names:

Simple Plan
Taking Back Sunday
All-American Rejects
Death Cab For Cutie
Dashboard Confessional
Default
Nada Surf
Sugarcult
Sugarplum Fairy
Jimmy Eat World
Weezer
Sunrise Avenue
Yellowcard

Oh, and by the way, yes, emo does mean emotional but its also like the label used to mainstream punk music. Hope this helps. :)

Emo is emotionally charged punk music.
It's a sub genre of hardcore punk. One characteristic of punk music is that it is not mainstream and it's anti-melodic using only about 5 chords in each song. So far none of those bands fall into that category. So, no they are not emo.
Emo Bands are::
I Hate Myself
I Would Set Myself on Fire For You
Circle Takes the Square
Harriett the Spy
Beefeater
Sunny Day Real Estate.

I think any song that has to do with real life stuff and how the people feel about it should be considered emo. And yes I think you're on the right track. I also think Evanescence is too.

If you hear a song and it makes you want to go curl up in a corner and cry for a few hours, then it's Emo.

Yes. It's punk influenced without actually being punk. More mopey. Weezer seems to be where most people say it starts.
