Isandlwana, fought in the Zulu War on 22 January 1879, was located in Zululand (modern Natal), and was the most humiliating defeat inflicted on the British Army since the start of the century.

To answer this question, I pulled from the shelf my copy of Pakenham's 1991 history, "The Scramble for Africa: the White Man's Conquest of the Dark Continent from 1876 to 1912". About 15 pages are devoted to Isandlwana and its circumstances.

The war started because of a boundary dispute between Ceteshwayo, the Zulu king, and the British, who were trying to expand in the Transvaal region. Lord Chelmsford, the British commander, expected little resistance. He divided his 7000 troops, leaving a garrison at Roark's Drift, a supply depot 12 miles from Isandlwana, and then splitting the remaining contingent into three columns, intending to push the Zulus back along a broad front.

With the three columns widely separated, one, led by a Col. Durnford, was attacked by 20,000 Zulus. Of the 800 whites engaged, only 30 survived. Including an attack against Roark's Drift, where the defenders improvised some fortifications, the British lost 858 whites, including 52 officers, and 471 black troops.

When the battle was over, the victorious Zulus slipped away undetected. Chelmsford later came upon the scene of bloodshed, and his men spent the night among the bodies of their comrades. Many corpses had been stripped naked and mutilated.

Eventually Ceteshwayo and the Zulus were defeated in the war, but Isandlwana shocked London, causing Disraeli to relinquish power to Gladstone.
