Mustiness is usually a result of too much humidity and lack of air circulation. You should put a dehumidifier where it smells the most musty and put a fan closeby so it circulates the air. On a "dry" (low humidity) day you can open the windows and use a fan blowing outward as an exhaust fan and it will draw clean air in the other windows. Until the humidifier has a chance to work you can use an air freshener.

If the humidifier does not solve the problem it's likely that water is getting into the building somehow--like through the concrete foundation. In that case you'll need a contractor to fix the problem.

Anything that addresses the odor without eliminating the source is a temporary measure at best. In many cases, if the water has intruded behind the drywall, the actual drywall itself and all the insulation in the area effected may need to be replaced. This is the only sure way to eliminate the odor.

You need an air purifier that has a ozone generator in it. Set it up and run it a few days to remove the odor.....but don't stay in the building while you do this. I have an air purifier for my shop it has a switch so I can turn the ozone on or off. I usually leave when I run the ozone because it Will irritate your eyes and lungs.

There are chemical available through professionals, but a less expensive way is to spread charcoal around, let it set for a couple of days, then pick it up and have a Bar-B-Q. The charcoal won't taste any different, but it is a shame to waste it, and the orders will be gone. Now, if it is something like mold, or something dead in the walls, it may come back.

Musty odours are caused by moisture mainly. Go to any hardware stores and buy silicon gels from them. They are little gel balls used to keep moisture away from camera lens and amoury.
Wrap bags of them with old stockings and place them around the house.
Other helps could try mothballs or pandan leaves. You could get the latter from some Chinese food market or Indian Spice stores.

Hope these help.

1. Find the cause and eliminate it. It may be mold, other rotting vegetation or animal life, pet dander, etc

2. Eliminate the cause.

3. Open doors and windows to blow the old air out and let fresh air in. Fans can help speed this part of the process up.

Various kinds of air filtration devices are marketed that make claims about "freshening" the air. Certainly, any device that can pull particulate matter out of the air can improve its quality.

After the dehumidifier, rent an ozone generator, or you can buy a good medium sized one for about $800. It will destroy moldy, musty and tobacco smells. You need to run it at night when no one is in the building.
