Well, back in the 70's, it wasn't okay to be gay. They had to disguise it in songs. In california, there were places called bath houses where men would "hook-up". They fun part about the YMCA for the village people was that there was only men there at that time. Thank you.

The Village People were making fun of a necessity, not having enough money to rent an apartment or stay at a good hotel, so it is a cheap but feasible idea to have "fun" at the YMCA instead.

The YMCA doesn't rent overnight rooms anymore. Too risky. Too many weirdos like that absurd "cop" from the Village People who was arrested for drug possession a couple of months ago. Everyone I know who is old enough to remember 70's disco and the "Village People" laughed at the arrest.

In the "Old days" (up to the 1970s or 80s) most YMCAs had cheap rooms you could rent. Some folks lived there for years. In the Village, the YMCA was knows as a gay hangout.
