In part I am interested in this question because according to South Dakota's ban on abortion a woman can still take emergency contraception before pregnancy is detected. Depending on how many days this is could make this a reasonable defense of why the exception of rape was not included in bill. If a woman was raped and did indeed get pregnant, which the chances are extremely low relative to other forms of conceiving, then she would, if educated, know she could get emergency contraception or maybe simply take the plan B after morning pill.

migamw, no, the infant is not at fault if conceived by the act of a rape.

tigerzntalons, yes you have given a situation in which a woman who was raped and conceived would fall through the "cracks" of such a ban. However, between the low probability of conception from rape, and availability of emergency contraception up to at least 9 days in your words would mitigate most of the women in such situations. To allow millions of children to die in exchange for an extremely small percentage of women who would fall outside this plan is not very pragmatically compassionate.

evillilbutte..., i hate to say this but these women can still take the emergency contraception until pregnancy is detected. If doing after conception this would could cause a micro abortion, hence women in such cases would still have a way out if they so chose. As for women not reporting being raped that is true many women do not report it. As I said before the likelihood for conceiving under the stressful circumstances of rape are incredibly low. Couple this with the opportunity to take emergency contraception the numbers would be even lower, the number of women conceiving and wanting later on to have an abortion. To block such a ban for such a low number of women (currently only .002% of women abort due to rape) would be to cause undue suffering to millions of children as well as their mothers which suffer depression, suicidal thoughts, breast cancer, infertility, etc. The negatives aspects of this ban are heavily out weighed by its benefits.

Jennedy, according to your answer a woman who was raped would have at least 5 days to take emergency contraception. If the government educated women as to the procedure to take when raped most women who might conceived due to rape would have the ability to block such a result.

baby_gurl_3778, I am sorry to read you were a victim yourself of rape. You have my sympathies. As for the chances of conceiving via rape or otherwise, they are not the same. The more stress your body undergoes the lesser the chance you will conceive and be able to bring such a child to term. This is not to say it does not happen. It only says the probability is lower. IMO one of the functions of female orgasm is to facilitate the probability of conception. I could go into the details but I'll withhold them for now. Best of wishes on your upcoming birth.

Typically it can be detected within 1-2 weeks after conception (or around the next period is due) with a standard home pregnancy test. Blood tests can show up even sooner.
If someone is raped then they will more than likely be at the hospital right away...in which then it is their choice to get a morning after pill. I guess that could be their only shot though. That's not completely unreasonable, as you can get some pretty good education about your options from doctors and social workers at a hospital.

pregnancy hormones become detectable 10-14 days after conception
Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception (EC) is a safe and effective means of preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. EC, also known as emergency birth control, has been available for more than 30 years. It contains hormones found in birth control pills and must be started within 120 hours after unprotected intercourse
AND TO SOME OF THE OTHER POSTS. YES IF A WOMAN IS RAPED IT'S NOT THE INFANTS FAULT..... BUT ITS NOT THE WOMAN'S FAULT EITHER. COULD YOU LIVE WITH A CHILD KNOWING THEY CAME FORM A RAPE? WOULD THAT CHILD BE TREATED FAIRLY? AND IT WOULD BE EVEN HARDER TO DEAL WITH CARRYING A CHILD FOR 9 MONTHS THEN GIVE THEM UP. AND IF YOU KEEP THE CHILD HOW ARE YOU GOING TO EXPLAIN TO THE THAT THEY WERE THE RESULT OF A RAPE.
I by no means agree with abortion but if the circumstances a unusual like Rape. Then you need to do what you need to do.

According to some pregnancy tests they can predict pregnancy 5 days before a missed period. That would still be too late to take emergency contraception though. The whole point of emergency contraception is to prevent the egg from attaching itself if there is a chance a woman could be pregnant but doesn't want to be, for example if the condom broke. If a woman is raped though they may not think to get emergency contraception, there is a really high estimated number of women that don't even report being raped.

Typically a pregnancy can be detected by week 4 cause conception doesnt take place til 2 weeks after LMP and then theres implantation. But, the plan B or morning after pill is to be used within 48 hours to be effective. It can be used after but, it is less beneficial. Rape cases are typically reported immediately which is why it is ditributed. And the chances of a raped woman getting pregnant is just the same for any other woman having sex with her husband. 50-50 chance. Some rape cases go however un-reported not because lack of education but, because of just plain being scared. Rape victims undergo dirastic emotional problems as well as social anxiety and mental instamina. I hoe this answers your question. If not, you can email me direct and I will further discuss the values and attributes of a rape victim having been raped myself.

The morning after pill is used to morning after sexual intercourse (thus, the name) and does not work unless taken within that first 24 hours following the activity. Many raped women feel ashamed and embarrased. As result, they dont want anyone to know what happened to them. They never go to a doctor or even report the attack. Therefore, by the time they've discovered that the rape resulted in pregnancy, it's already too late for the morning after pill.
A woman ovulates 14 days BEFORE the start of her period. The egg, if fertilized, implants in the uterine wall and initiates pregnancy in 5 to 7 days following conception. However, pregnancy cant be detected till 5 days BEFORE the start of her period when pregnancy hormones reach detectable levels or approximatly 9 days after ovulation and conception.

Apparently, quite early. I was on a very crowded train the other day and an attractive woman standing up next to me asked "Would you give up your seat to a pregnant woman"? I felt very sheepish and said yes. I continued to look at her fantastic figure and said "You don't look very pregnant. How far along are you?" She replied, "Oh, about 2 hours".
