As someone who's lost my mom and dad, I can tell you there are no good sayings for that ... the most appreciated thing you can do is tell your friend you're sorry for their loss and let them know you're there if they need you.
The very best card I got when I lost my dad was from a friend of mine who wrote down a memory she had of my dad from when she was 10. I read the story and was touched by the love and respect she had for my dad. It was beautiful... her own words and feelings :)

Man, that's hard. Well I remember when my grandma die and all I wanted was to be alone, but its not good to be by yourself. If I were you I would be by that person until they are ready to talk, then help them get it out of their mind by doing something they enjoy. Show them life goes on and that their family members wouldn't want them to be miserable.

tell them that you have no idea what they are going through but you are there for them and if there is anything at all you can do to help them then please let you know. also give your condolonces.
