Here are some tips:

1) Make sure you have a good distance from the monitor, usually it should be twice the distance that you would normally keep while reading a book. Enhance your font size if reading is difficult
2) During any break make sure your wash your eyes with cold water, eyes consume the max energy in the body and get heated up the max.
3) Try taking a break every 40-45 minutes if you can
4) Ensure proper lighting in the room, the light should either be over head or behind you never behind the monitor
5) Drink a lot of liquids, liquids produce tears, which are good.
6) Consiously increase your blinking rate, eyes relax during blinking
7) After sessions on the monitor, look at the stars...this allows the eyes to focus on infinity objects and thus reduces stress in the muscles
8) Get a proper rest, like the gopod old 8hr nap

Hope this helps

This is similar to some of the other answers but:

1) Make sure there is no glare in the room.
2) Make sure flourescant lights aren't flickering

and more importantly, my optometrist told me:
3) Look away every 20 minutes or so and refocus your eyes at varying distances - for example, first focus on something a meter away, then 10 meters away, then 100 meters away.

Obviously if you're in a small room, or have no windows, you can't do this, in which case move your eyes around quickly, focusing on different things around the room at varying distances.

Make sure to look away every few minutes or so, your blink rate goes down when you are looking at a computer screen so you may just have dry eyes. Also go to an optometrist and have your eyes checked. If it turns out that you need glasses make sure to get an anti-glare coating, this will help reduce eye strain with computers as well.

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel (was it called "Ask Dr Know"???) who experiemented on this subject of tv and computers being bad for your eyes and he said that for every few hours you watch tv or stare at the computer screen, to take rest breaks and look at something on the other side of the room. Just take breaks when you're on the computer. Stop and get a drink or to have dinner and then go back to the computer. Good luck.

take a break every once in awhile so that your eyes dont strain as much. maybe do to the bathroom and put a little water on your face.
