Well, you could try doing this (but wait before you do):

Go to Start > Run, type msconfig in the box and hit enter, go to the Startup tab and disable non-essential items (check with a search engine to see if it is safe to disable that item).

That is not what I would reccomend. I would suggest that you download CodeStuff Starter, http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html and use that instead, it is a far more powerful and easy to use tool than msconfig is. You will be presented with three tabs, Services, Processes and Startup. Startup is the easiest to deal with, simply uncheck the items you don't want (again making sure they are safe to disable).

Where you will save a lot of trouble is the Services tab. There are three types here, Manual (items that start when needed only), Automatic (items that start automatically) and Disabled (does not start at all). I'll help you a little here are some services that can be Disabled in most situations without any problem:

See the image here (the list is quite long), http://xgatech.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=453&cid=5

You may or may not have the same items in your list but those that match yours are perfectly safe to disable. Everything else that is non-essential will be found in your Startup list and as I said, you'll have to check with a search engine on those, a few off the top of my head are:

AIM (or any IM application)
qttask
iPod Helper
and a host of others (I can't get an all-in-one screenshot of this).

You might try & click on your start button, go to programs, then click on accessories. Find the System Tools button then click on Scheduled Task. Find the programs you wish not show on your taskbar & see if there is a button to not have it show & click apply. Also check each program & see if you can not have that icon show. I hope this helps...

You may have to re-install the programs. Go into "My Computer" then "Add/Remove Programs", find the program, click on change/remove, and it should give you the option to reinstall it. If and when you do re-install it, be sure to click no when it asks you if you want to add a "Quick Launch" icon. Hope that helps, love!

Start > Run > Type msconfig > Startup Tab > uncheck Programs > Reboot.

That should help.
