This is a hypothetical situation - lets say I believe that a local business is involved in illegal activities (selling drugs or guns etc) I decide to open a snack bar beside them because the space is for rent. Because of the suspected illegal activity next door I end up with lots and lots of customers at my snack bar because of all of the traffic. Is it unethical to profit indirectly from this business?

No, that is not unethical. It is unethical and poor citizenship to not call police about the illegal activity, however.

Sort of a "moth to the flame" situation........if the illegal activities are actually taking place there, you are subjecting your employees or yourself to a volatile environment, could there be shootings or robberies there? Could your business be at higher risk for burglary or break-ins due to the type of clientele your neighbor attracts? If you knowingly opened a business there and your nightshift manager was shot during a robbery attempt, I'd say that would likely give you reason to feel twinges of conscience about your location.

You won't be profiting, becuase most people who would go to your nieghbor for illegal activity will not stay around the crime sceane to grab a snack. YOUR customer base will also leave, because they don't want to be around the type of area where shady dealing occour. It would actually be more profitable to report them and get good neighbors.

Yes, it is unethical. While you are not profiting from the illegal activity itself, you ARE profiting from your knowledge of the illegal activity.

While that is an indirect connection, it is a connection nonetheless and unethical.

NO it is NOT unethical - what would be unethical is if you were doing the same out of your store....

Who your "clients" would be is irrelevant! What? You people don't think that people who sell drugs or guns shop at wal-mart???

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!!! If there are customers available - take that Location!!!

It is up to you but the company or corporation you run has no feelings and is not a person and would jump at the opportunity.

I'd be more worried about getting shot in the crossfire when the gangwars start.
