I believe that changing the New Zealand flag is inevitable as indeed is New Zealand becoming a republic, albeit whilst remaining within the Commonwealth. However, these things will happen in the longer rather than shorter term mainly because there is no immediate and passionate desire for change but rather, while we continue to view the UK with affection, there is a growing awareness within NZ of our individuality and distinct identity away from our old colonial masters.

I agree with Johno. We will definitely change our flag, but not in the short term. There is still a strong identification with the flag amongst those in their mid to older years.

Feelings are especially strong around those who still remember their parents or grandparents fighting wars under the current flag.

Give it ten or fifteen years and it should have happened.
