Well you only really need two things, besides the drive to do it and some talent, and they are Time and money.
If you have both you can put out a superior looking product and really nail down how to distribute your comic with really effective marketing that lets people know what your selling.
If you just have money hire someone to put it together and take care of the business end.
if you just have the time you are really going to have to network hard to get all the things that you are going to need to put it together and distribute it.
but dont fear the internet it can really clue you in to affordable solutions (including printing and marketing solutions)
try to set your goals at a resonable level, be true to your ideas and stick to it and you should be fine.

START HERE:

Or talk with this author:

http://www.chestercomix.com/

He publishes his own educational comics, and they are professionally done. Email him and he can give you some insight.

Althernatively, inquire from these guys:

http://www.publishondemand.net/...

They publish books, don't know about comics.

Maybe you should publish on the web, as a serial. If the story is as good as you say, then you can really build a fan base this way.

Distribution and marketing is the real challenge (I know, we have a board game)
