It is not necessary to tip anyone... ever. But it is polite for certain services.
I do not, and have never, tipped my mechanic or any other mechanic.

You people do not seem to understand that the SHOP makes the money, not the mechanic. The mechanic only gets a small portion of what you pay per hour. Yes, some mechanics make a good amount but a lot do not. You should not assume that because you are paying $80 per hour that the worker is getting anywhere near that. That would be like you getting all the money that your company brought in while you were working. So in answer to the question finally, if they go out of their way for you on a big job it wouldn't hurt to throw them a 10 or a 20...

depends on if the mechanic works for someone else or not. If it's his own shop, no need. if you feel like he saved you some money and fixed the problem right the first time, and works for someone else. then Tip if it makes you feel good. but the average mechanic is not used to getting tips and if he works in a dealership you may never even meet the man who fixes your car. but rest assured he probably really enjoys what he's doing and if he saw you broke down on the road side, he do what ever he could to get you going for the price of a thank you.

Generally in an autoshop the mechanic that works there (not owner) is not gonna get all that money you spend. If you feel that mechanic deserves a tip go for it. If it is someone who does mechanic work on the side and gives you a great deal go ahead and give him a tip. Provided they have done a great job! This will make for graet Karma for you : )

I love to be tipped..... but in the profession, about the only time tipping would be recommended is if the person does a service for you and doesn't charge for it (I sometimes change fuses for the cost of the fuse only on customers cars and they reward by tipping occasionally)

I don't think it is necessary to tip a mechanic unless they go out of their way to do something extra for you.
They get paid (well) for the service they are providing you.

I don't really belive you should tip your mechanic. I mean, you are getting a service but it's not like you are at a restaurant, where you would tip your server. You are having an item repaired, you are not being fed, unless it BS from the mechanic.
But, NO, you shouldn't tip your mechanic.
I hope mine isn't reading this.

LOL no. They usually charge you a flat hourly rate for each job and complete it in about 1/2 the time they charged you for. There is their tip.
