It was relativity theory that gave birth to the idea of distortions in space-time moving like ripples. There is some evidence to suggest that these actually exist but they are darned difficult to measure.

Gravity waves are a form of electromagnetic energy that result from the distortion of space/time such as the merging of two neutron stars or two other high density objects in close orbit.That's the basic answer without the math.Hope this helps.
