Absolutely. In fact, it is the recommended way to do all three. Because files for drivers and other programs are loaded during bootup and marked by Windows as "in use" those files can not be cleaned if they are infected, or moved by a defrag.

When you boot in Safe Mode only the files absolutely neede to run Windows are loaded. None of the drivers or other program starts are loaded. That is why your screen is "funny" in Safe Mode, youe video drivers have not been loaded.

Because nothing is loaded, all three programs can run better

Personally I think YES. In safe mode you are running only neccasary files to run windows.

This helps all the scans run faster and if you have a virus that is currently on your PC most will not run during safe mode.

Put it this way, it doesnt hurt any to do it in this mode.

Good Luck.

I can see why you run virus scans in Safe Mode... Due to only the processes needed to actually start up the computer will start and not anything else. As for the others, I don't think it would matter in what mode you actually run it in.

No. Defragging reorders your HD to make it easier to run programs. This is done the same whether in Normal or Safe mode. It will be easier for your computer to run the Virus or Spyware programs.

This site will educate you on the proper procedure for doing Virus and Spyware scans and removal. It is titled for Spyware removal but the procedure is the same for Virus scan also. Just use the appropriate programs for the type of infection. The procedure is the important part.

The only thing I can think of is that the defrag may be a little tiny bit better because a lot of drivers are not active. I haven't run scandisk in years, but chkdsk runs at boot so I doubt if it would help scandisk, and if you can't start the pc in "std" mode to run a utility, then safemode is worth trying!

Interesting question. I've only used safe mode for recovery.

Actually it is more thorough because many other programs, spyware, viruses, etc cannot function while the computer is in safe mode. Once you are there, enter DOS mode and run your antivirus scanners. Defragmenters biggest competitor is your screen saver.. temporarily disable it while you're defragging the drive.
