Assuming that you don't have really nice hardwood floors under the carpet, use a razor knife to cut the carpet out in chunks. Roll up the pieces and carry them out. You will find tack strips along the perimeter of the room, which are strips of wood with tacks sticking upward to grab the carpeting. You can use a hammer claw or small pry bar to pry the the strips up from the floor.

Box cutter. Just cut it into big pieces and pull it up. Be careful -- around the edges of the room are tack strips, so don't get hurt on their sharp edges.
