In my experience minimum 2 maximum 3 holding the starter to the transmission but check the rear of the starter for a retaining bracket it would be helpful to add info to your question e.g. model of your car engine size etc

I don't know - what kind of car is a w reg?

Seriously, it depends on the car. The only ones I've changed have either one or two bolts holding the wires in place, and two bolts holding them to the engine or transmission. However, it's possible someone may have used three bolts or more to mount the starter. Two is about the minimum.

I fitted alternators and starters for the past 15yrs, but without the model of the car wouldn't be able to tell you where your fixing bolts are.
