The purpose of unions is to allow similar groups of workers to collectively bargain with employers and make collective demands.

For example: A 5000 employee company is not going to be terribly worried if one person threatens to stop working over a lack of benefits, or poor treatment, or low wages. But if 2000 employees get together and agree to strike, then they have leverage over the employer.

if you mean labor unions it is to give workers more bargaining power to improve working conditions, wages, etc in negotiations with corporations.
