The black socks sold in stores aren't good for my feet, since they're usually made of polyester which ends up making my feet sweaty. Can I dye my white cotton socks with something to make them look black? Does anyone have experience doing this?

At Walmart they sell black gym socks which are cotton and not expensive at all. They may have black gym socks at a sporting good store too but a little more pricey. I wear black gym socks for work and they look like dress socks. Dying is such a hassle but it can be done. Use Rit dye. They may run when you sweat though.

If you dye I'll never speak to you again! heh-heh

Have a great day!!!

Yes, you can dye white socks to look black, but they will look faded black, as if you've had them for a long time and they will bleed when you wash them. If you can only use cotton, Look around, there are plenty of places that carry black cotton socks.

If you still can't find them, click on the link below.

I have done this before with pretty good results. The color will fade after a while but I still wear them because they are dark enough to wear with dress shoes. The best way to do it is in a sauce pan over low heat. You will get the most dye saturation for your socks vs. putting them in the wash where the dye will be more diluted. Once they are done, put them in the washer and run a cold water rinse cycle and the color will be locked into the fabric.

Yes you can. The elastic part of the sock will still be white and might show thru the dark cotton. Especially when stretched. Why not purchase black socks?

They do sell black cotton socks. Dying them black will work only for 2 washes or so as the black dye will quickly fade.

I tried to dye a pair of white cotton shorts black once. They came out gray. I tried with the same pair several times & no luck.

You can buy black cotton socks, as I have several pairs myself. You can also buy fabric dyes very cheap at any sewing/crafts area.
