Mount Everest was still the world's highest mountain. It didn't suddenly spring up to it's full height once someone spotted it! It was already there and at that height whether or not it had been discovered!

A better phrasing for the question might be:
"Before Mount Everest was discovered, what mountain did people consider to be the highest?"

Since people have lived near Everest for tens of thousands of years no one knows. If you mean "as far as Europeans were concerned" it's probably whatever mountain in the Alps was highest. I think it's Der Mount Blanc.

Everest was still the highest, unless there is another higher, yet to be discovered mountain!

It was difficult to measure the mountains. Mount Kilimanjaro (MK) was in the lead as the tallest mountain untill Mount Everest (ME) was discovered.

The title "tallest mountain" was tossed back and forth between these two mountains a couple of times after measuring was taken place.

There was a time when we had pictures of people on the summit of ME when MK was considered the tallest.
