let the time on the shipbe 't' hours
time on the train=20-t hours
distance on the ship=time*speed=32t
distance on thetrain=52(20-t)
total distance =600 miles given
theequation is
32t+52(20-t)=600
32t+1040-52t=600
-20t=-440
t=22
since the answer is coming absurd the sum is wrong
yes voila it is
even if the entire trip is made on the ship the distance in
20 hrs @32 mph is 640 miles so cannot be 600!!!!!!

I'm not sure how you'd want to answer this question, because even if you spent all your 20 hours on the slower ship at 32 mph you'll still be going 640 miles, more then the total length of the trip!

There must be something wrong with the question.

If the whole journey was made by ship then 600 miles would be covered in 600/32 hours, which is less than 20.

Any time spent on the train would shorten the overall journey time as it travels faster.

9hr on the ship covers a distance = 9 * 32 = 288 miles.
6hr on the train covers a distance = 6 * 52 = 312 miles.

Total distance = 600 miles
Total time = 15hr. (not 20hr).

it not possible to travel by train and ship at these speeds because one is able to cover the 600 miles in less then 600 miles.

x + y = 20
32x + 52y = 600

Multiply top by -32

-32x - 32y = -640
32x + 52y = 600

20y = -40
y = -2

x + y = 20
x - 2 = 20
x = 22

Not possible
