All RAM is NOT the same. There are several STANDARD types.
The best thing to do is to go to a website such as http://www.crucial.com or http://www.kingston.com , select your computer from the list provided, and purchase online. Best of all, they only show you the RAM compatible with your computer, so you know what you buy should work. In MOST cases, they will have the cheapest prices online.
One thing - pay attention to how many slots you have - if you have 2 you might have two 128 MB sticks right now which means you would need to replace them. Or you might have one 256 MB Stick. You should probably look at pictures of the RAM so you can identify inside your computer, then look inside to see how many slots are available/used.
As for installing it, RAM sticks have notches on them that prevent you from installing them incorrectly. You should be able to slide the stick into the RAM slot and install it easily. Many places charge $20-$50 to do this and it literally takes longer to remove the case cover than it does to install the memory in MOST cases, so in my opinion, this is a HUGE rip off.
And to the previous poster - are you serious? Contact your local administrator? Please... most people asking a question like this are home users - they are the "local administrator"

Standard being standard, but now it is fractured between various speed rates, that's the lingo you just quoted, so given the system specs (Dell 4600 using a particular board and CPU) your choice is limited to such a fix. Need to call up Dell for a spec sheet on the Dell model you have, perhaps their website already got the spec sheet ready to print?
Most friendly local shop will help read in those and give you the correct rated RAM. Perhaps they were kind enough to install given some service charge.
Again, while RAMs are standardized from way back, they fractured between speed rates, ask full spec on the machine. I doubt you have any purchase options.

LOL. you're able to do despite you like on your pal. in case you have 4 ram slots on your laptop and you have 2X256 on one pair and 2X512 on the different end, that could desire to ascertain, a million.5Gigbytes of reminiscence. To coach this on your pal, deploy the reminiscence you bumped off, then visit start > Run and style msinfo32.exe. then you definitely could examine the quantity of RAM which you presently have.

Go to http://www.crucial.com/ there is a section to help you figure out what type of RAM you need, or you could open your case and pop the ram out. There should be a label on the ram with the type and size.
