I woke up and my arm was completely numb and immovable. It took at least a minute for the 'pins and needles' sensation to start and for me to have some muscle control over it. It made me wonder if sleeping on a limb wrong for too long can cause some kind of permanent damage.

you might be suffering from "Saturday night palsy where you outstretched your arm and lied on it while sleeping. this condition happens to me.
"Saturday Night Palsy"

Saturday Night Palsy or Transient Paresthesia is the sensation felt after compression of a radial nerve in the arm during heavy sleep or if an arm is draped over a chair for an extended time. Upon waking, a person will have no feeling in the arm and will be unable to raise it. Injury can result in a diagnosis of Radial Mononeuropathy. This is also called Saturday Night Wrist, Honeymooner's Palsy, Wrist Drop, and Radial Neuropathy.

Unless it's been a week I don't think you have anything to worry about. Once I woke up around 3 am and went to roll over (I was on my back). When I started to move I felt something heavy hit my forehead. I freaked out and sat up. I felt this 'something' hit my right thigh. I then realized that it was my right arm. I was sleeping with my arm bent at the elbow and my hand positioned straight up in the air. My arm, from the elbow to the hand, fell asleep and hit me in the head when I moved. Don't know how long I had been asleep like that but it took at least 7-8 mins for the pins and needles to start. At first I thought I had paralyzed it somehow. Thank goodness that wasn't the case.
If you sleep on your arm the wrong way you can hurt it. You could sprain it or pull a muscle or tendon. It will be sore for a while but not forever!

Have a great day!!!

p.s.- fifty can't get carpal tunnel just by sleeping on his arm or hand wrong. It's a repetitive stress disorder. I was close to getting it when I was driving a truck for work everyday.

I'm a side sleeper and after over a year of my arms aching I went to the doctor, had X-Ray of shoulders and synopsis was I sleep on my arms. Well I can see that with my skin marks from doing so. He told me to either sleep on my back or sleep in a lounge chair. Well I did just that and after a few days my arms didn't hurt at all and got use to going to sleep on my back. No medical problem at all. It was me. I really believe if it hurts, don't do it or change the way you sleep.

I got carpal tunnel syndrome from doing that. Pins and needles can be a symptom. Although I don't really have any scientific evidence, since then I have believed that it is not a good idea to sleep on my arms or hands.

Yes you can make it very sore the next day by compressing the nerve. YYou can also do lots of damage gnawing it off so you dont wake up that ugly Sheila you passed out drunk with too.
