Sometimes they count tickets sold and other times people who show up. Which of those does MLB use?

Total tickets sold!! End of story!! They could care less whether you show up to the game or not. They already got your money.

total tickets sold per game, then add each game together. Yes, both leagues count the same way. It does not matter how many people pass through the turn styles

Actually, there is a difference.

National League: Paid tickets, regardless of actual attendance.

American League: Paid tickets attending the game.

they count the people when the come through the gates. either by turnstile or ticket scan.

usually tickets sold. it sounds better. you can tell on TV if they are actually sold out or not.
