1983 Nighthawk gets about 40-45 mpg
So after 200 miles start looking for gas.

That varies mainly with how aggressively you drive it. My Kawasaki KLR650 will get about 250 miles on a 5 gallon tank. Though aftermarket air filter, carb jets and exhaust make my bike get fewer mpg than stock.

My '80 CB750K gets about 50mpg. I have a 5.4 gal. tank, so I look for gas about 200 - 250 miles. Or whenever I feel like it. Never hit reserve on it.

About 240 miles give or take. And that's without going on reserve.
